early memories

My earliest memories are of creating things, collages, drawing, coloring. . . one of my favorite early photos is of me wearing my little apron full of color crayons and my highschool yearbook quote was something along the lines of, "I will decorate the world with my 96 color box of crayons".

In my youth, art was very much about sharing and seeing if anyone was paying attention.  It was how I showed love.  It was my hello.

I also really loved, music (I have an uncanny memory for tunes) and dancing and probably would have headed that direction if it weren't for a pretty hefty amount of nerves/stage fright.  I think that is where my later love of playing with words came from and greatly influences my poetry which has strong musical undertones.

As many of us do in the arts, I struggled for a long time finding my area of focus because I have enjoyed working in all mediums, but no matter what direction I took, I always found my way back to the camera, so that is predominantly where I focus.  Early on working in the photographic industry was a way of playing it safe, kind of keeping the technical side active without really having to put myself out there as an artist.  Eventually I decided to move away from it professionally, as I found when I "had to" do it because it was my daily job I would completely stop shooting in my free time artistically.

word vomit

I discovered in my late 20s the wonderful world of words.

I never thought much of it until I sat in on a poetry vibe session at the local JC.  They gave us a topic and a few minutes and we went up and shared and this little nervous nelly was hooked.  (Not about the sharing part, but just the playing with words part.)  I found I had a few things to say.

I'm not the most disciplined of writers as everything I have written quite literally comes out as word vomit, but I enjoy the catharsis and the results.

Writing is really what ignited the spark to start sharing my art in all forms and planted the seed for my change in perspective about my relationship with art.
